Charity overview
Activities - how the charity spends its money:
“To acquire, procure or otherwise obtain and supply medical and surgical equipment, medicines, preparations, appliances and apparatus for the hospitals in Derby and Burton in order to add to the said hospitals’ facilities to investigate, diagnose, prevent, relieve and cure sickness and ill health of every kind.”
When and why did the charity begin and develop up to now (2023)?
The charity began as the Derby Scanner appeal in 1983, when it was founded to raise money for a much-needed whole body CT (computerised tomography) scanner for the Derby royal infirmary (DRI).
It was then renamed the Derby S.A.M.E. (scanner and medical equipment appeal) in 1986 when joined by the Sight saver appeal which started to raise money for a much needed Yag laser in Derby.
The Breast test appeal joined the charity in July 1990. The national breast screening programme had begun in Southern Derbyshire in 1989 and an additional mammography machine was urgently needed to allow a full breast service for the local people, including direct GP referral.
The bone scanner appeal was founded in July 1992 , as there was no bone density service locally, a bone scanner was purchased in 1993 and a new osteoporosis service was then started. This appeal was incorporated into the scanner appeal a couple of years ago.
The charity has been renamed the Derby and Burton Breast and eye charity in 2023 for our new website and for better clarity regarding its scope and main areas of work as well as to reflect the merger of these services across the region. However it is important to explain that the charity is still registered with the charity commission under the name the Derby SAME appeal. A change of name may result in a legacy made many years ago being lost, which the Trustees do not want to happen, especially as a wonderful legacies have been received very recently in 2022 and 2021 to the original scanner and sight saver appeals respectively. The overall appeal continues to include 3 charities : the original Derby scanner appeal, the Breast test appeal and the sight saver appeal.
The charity has been very successful , thanks to the amazing efforts and generosity of our local people and communities. The last annual report in 2022 showed that £4,085,000 – just over 4 million pounds had been raised in the 39 years since it began and £3,634,000 spent on equipment for our local NHS hospitals.
There is however a great need for our work to continue in these challenging times.
