Derby & Burton Breast & Eye Charity

Our charity encompasses 3 appeals:

Thanks to amazing donations to the Derby Breast test appeal, such as from the Glitz and Glamour ladies, above, the Derby and Burton breast services are introducing a better pathway for patients with small cancers in the breast, where a small marker is placed prior to the day of surgery to mark the area that needs to be removed. This significantly reduces stress on the day of their operation.

The Derby Sight saver appeal is delighted to have been able to provide funds for the local ophthalmology team to purchase a corneal cross-linking (CXL) machine in November 2022. CXL halts the progression of keratoconus by cross linking the collagen fibres through a very simple procedure and reduces the need for corneal transplant (potential blindness) by 20 fold.

The Derby scanner appeal was formally registered as a charity in October 1983. Mr David Thomas, surgeon was appointed as chairman and Mrs Dyan Dawes (now Holland) was secretary. Amazingly the huge target of  £600,000 for a CT body scanner for the Derby Royal Infirmary was exceeded and the CT scanner was installed in 1985. The charity has thrived and expanded into 3 appeals.

“The aim of the Derby and Burton Breast and Eye charity is to raise funds for the purchase of new and state of the art equipment for the NHS locally. “

The charity is run entirely voluntarily by a group of Trustees, now in its 40th year 1983-2023!

This helps ensure the best possible facilities for the diagnosis and treatment for the people in our local community and helps keep our hospitals at the forefront of technology.
